By Darren Stowe

A hei matau is a bone or greenstone carving in the shape of a highly stylised fish hook typical of the Māori people of New Zealand. They represent strength, good luck and safe travel across water.

This stunning pounamu pendant has been handcarved in a contemporary design.

Pounamu plays a very important role in Māori culture. It is considered a taonga (treasure). Pounamu taonga increase in mana (prestige) as they pass from one generation to another. It is only found in the South Island of New Zealand.

Traditionally pounamu is always given as a gift to be treasured.

I have been working in stone (predominantly pounamu/jade) for nine years, and have worked in wood all my adult life.

I am increasingly drawn to the enduring quality of stone and the fact that it will outlive nearly all other materials.
I currently work from home in Dunedin.

(All pieces worn on the body regularly will absorb your body’s oil. Otherwise, oil wood and stone pieces from time to time using natural oils. They’ll love you for it!)
